Is your balance worse?
Balance Basics sums up the things you need to know to make your balance better and also avoid specific types of falls. When we fall we often become afraid that we will fall again and as a result we restrict our activities. Unfortunately this actually makes it more likely that we will fall. Fear causes falls. Fear also influences our quality of life. It is no fun being afraid. You do not have to feel frightened any longer!
What is in the Balance Basics DVD?
In Balance Basics we learn the essential elements of how to improve balance. We learn specific exercises for improving balance whether we are sitting or standing. We learn detailed strategies for avoiding particular types of falls. A separate special feature is included that teaches how to use the eyes to overcome dizziness and disorientation, an incredibly helpful skill that significantly reduces the likelihood of having a fall. It is an approach that can be especially useful with Parkinson's disease.
Do your legs feel weak or heavy to lift?
Often one of the first signs to us that we are getting older is one of the simple things, like having more difficulty walking than we used to or no longer being able to climb stairs. The simplest of all, standing up and sitting down, can become the hardest of all. It doesn't have to be this way.
What is in the Legs & Feet DVD?
In the Legs & Feet program we learn new ways which make these things much easier. In the process we learn how to no longer shuffle our feet and we therefore lower our risk of having a fall dramatically. This is a full body workout, as are all BBB programs. Although we focus on our legs and feet, we exercise everything else as well. A special feature on this DVD focuses on peripheral neuropathy of the feet. Exercises are included that improve foot mobility and nervous system health, conditions that reduce symptoms and improve overall function.
Does your neck hurt?
Do you have sciatica, scoliosis, spinal stenosis or herniated disks?
As we get older our posture deteriorates and our core weakens, in part because we sit so much. Compression aggravates the situation and often we suffer from nerve degeneration causing terrible pain.
What is in the Spine Health DVD?
In Developing Spine Health we take what is a complex situation and break it down into simple, easy to accomplish parts. We learn to reduce tension in both our lower spine and in our shoulders and neck. We learn in detail how to increase core strength, which will in turn improve the support of our compressed spine, reducing inflammation and pain. And we learn how to stretch and relax our spine itself giving it room to thrive. A special feature is included that teaches how to understand and treat nerve pain using wonderful resources known as dermatomes, particularly beneficial for anyone suffering from problems like sciatica.
Most chronic conditions that we experience as we get older have 2 components: (1) the source of the problem and (2) the inflammation generated by the body in reaction to the problem. Often we have no options for the source problem and our doctors may in fact say there is nothing that can be done. (Neuropathy is a good example.) However, there is a great deal we can do to reduce the ill affects of chronic inflammation.
What is in the Arthritis DVD?
We learn an easy movement approach that helps to heal injury or deterioration in any area of the body, regardless of the cause. A reduction in pain and inflammation and an increase in function often results. Specific workouts for arthritis of the knee and hands as well as rotator cuff injuries are included but the techniques taught help with any long standing problem.
Many students report improvement using the exercises from Building Better Balance. Some have reported how much easier it is now for them to walk. Some report that they no longer bump into the sides of hallways. Some feel rotator cuff or lower back relief. Many have avoided falls in progress. And certainly many feel their balance has gotten better.
"I purchased your Developing Spine Health video at Tuesday's class in Sonoma. Thank you, thank you. Following the video is easy and I found it to be quite a workout while making it fun. Love it and I will be using it in conjunction with the weekly lessons at Vintage House and the handouts you provide us with. Again - thank you...for teaching us how to strengthen our bodies and coping with the challenges we experience in just getting around. You are truly a life saver." Maggie Sueiro, 2015.
A student of Building Better Balance at 90: "Last week I had to go to my doctor for a stress test and was on the treadmill. I just started rolling through the feet (like you teach us) and kept on walking. The doctor eventually told me to stop. I could have gone on another 30 minutes. Walking has become so easy." At a later meeting, his doctor said that he had never seen another patient perform better on a stress test! The walking technique this gentleman used on the treadmill is taught in the Legs & Feet DVD.
