HOW TO PREVENT HAVING FALLS
Having a fall is one of the worst things that can happen to those older. Not only is injury possible but falls have the potential to cause a significant change in the quality of our lives. For instance, one student fell over backwards while looking up at the sky. She broke her hip which required surgery that she recovered from quickly. However, the shock of the fall set her into full blown dementia which necessitated full care for the rest of her life.
Because falls often happen suddenly, we surmise that there is little we can do to prevent them from happening. Nothing is further from the truth. There are literally hundreds of things you can do to reduce the likelihood of having the fall in the first place. You can reduce your fall associated risk which in turn will directly lower your chance of having a fall. A number of articles that I have written describe concrete and simple choices you can make that make you much safer while enjoying your golden years.
